The Clearing

I don't know about you, but I'm still trying to get my studio cleared after a nice holiday rush. Several of my beady friends have mentioned doing the same and although January is not Spring Cleaning time, I guess we could call it clearing time. My clearing also involves a good deal of desk work as I prepare information for taxes, start the new 2012 files and carefully store those from 2011.

Magpie Gemstones has done a good deal of clearing in the last couple of weeks. I hope you haven't missed out on the 20% off sale and have successfully completed your part of helping clear the beads. Usually when I go to a sale, I realize that things were put on sale because no one bought them. That's definitely NOT the case at Magpie. The beads are all on sale because the company must make room for those they will pick up soon in Tuscon. Now, there are two ways to look at this. Should I wait and get those beads they find in Tuscon or should I go ahead and get beads now. hmm . . . 20% off of everything now or wait for the regular, but good prices later. . . I say grab some of these goodies while we can!

During this clearing at Magpie, the company has found a few things they didn't realize were in hiding. Look at these beautiful drops and think what you could do with them. I'm considering whether to use them in pendant form or strung with others in a long strand. What do you think?

I appreciate being able to get the sunstone beads that are available at such a great price. I have previously used a good many of these mixed with other colors as well as by themselves. The schiller on these realy catches the eye. I also think they are a great transitional colors since they are not too dark even for Spring designs.

If you are doing any wire wrapping I think you would enjoy Szarka's new video, How to Wire Wrap an Arrowhead or Sharks Tooth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TgibieEZo18&feature=youtu.be&a . Even if you aren't planning to wrap either, this method can be used for some other shaped stones because she shows us how to make a type of sling for the stone to sit in. I think you would see many possible variations of this technique. Perhaps this method would get you going on clearing out a few of those stones that you have previously wondered what to do with. We would enjoy seeing a photo of what you make.

Easy Does It!

I think for me the New Year can be exciting. It feels like a clean slate. For those that create or want to create I have some easy does it tips.

First, I have to admit sometimes I have an "all or nothing" attitude. Where does this lead me? Experience tells me that when it is "all" I am doing too much, trying to go too fast, spinning my wheels and usually burn out quickly.

Now I am not saying that hard work does not pay off eventually. Rather I am just saying that when I have a little patience in my work, and rely on that inner voice that gently guides me, things go a lot smoother. If your a beginner in your craft, or have been doing it for years you may have noticed this already.

Now how about my "nothing" attitude. Sure everyone gets a case of the I don't wannas. Or perhaps your muse ran off? Maybe your trying hard on a project and it is just not cooperating. Sometimes cussing at your design works, sometimes not. There is the walk away and try again tomorrow technique. Whatever the case may be, it is a natural part of creating to get discouraged. Here are some helpful tips on that.

Do not compare yourself to others, nothing kills my creativity more than this. Everyone has their own style, talent and niche. Find what you love, and what works for you. When I compare myself to others it is an excuse for the old broken records to play in my head. Maybe you have the same record? It says I am not good enough, I can not do this because fill in the blank with a variety of fears.

When I allow that voice to take control, I get filled with self doubt and self pity. Most days I choose to ignore the broken record, and feed my soul with the positive thoughts of creating. What a wonderful gift to give yourself- a place to grow, freedom from perfectionism, putting love into your art, and honoring your life and your talent.

It is important for me to not judge my work harshly, but slowly improve (baby steps are great for that). As we go into the new year we look forward to seeing your creations.

Spring in January

It is unseasonably warm in Central Texas right now and this invokes thoughts of Spring. I found Szarka out tending her garden last week and her plants most likely enjoyed her nurturing. Those of us who have lived here a good while know that this warmer weather will come and go until the true Spring arrives in a couple of months. But for now, we will take what we can get.

When I checked in at Magpie, I was greeted at the door by the loud barking of the company dog, Sandy. She is ever vigilant and I doubt that anyone could get to the beads without going through her first. She gets my attention!

Magpie Gemstones definitely sprung into action this week by offering an uncustomary 20% off the entire store. This sounded to me like Spring cleaning, but I'm anticipating that the company is just making room for even more beads yet to come. I'm sure that whatever the reason, the discount is enjoyed by Magpie customers. Resolve

Wow, it's hard to believe that 2011 is running away while 2012 helps push it on out. This is the time when so many people make resolutions for the new year; how about you? I seem to make similar resolutions year after year and these are seldom resolved!

If you were a gemstone company like Magpie Gemstones, what should be your resolution? . . . As I write this for Magpie, I realize that the word for the company is really RESOLVE and the questions is "what does Magpie Gemstones resolve to do for customers?"

One thing the company resolves is for continue providing gorgeous gemstones for customers. Take a peek at what just went into the online store. I picked up a couple of these Boulder Opals the last time they were available and wrapped them with sterling silver wire. I'm anxious to get some of these new ones.

Wishing

When my mother hears a person wish for something, she usually says "if wishes were horses, then beggars would ride." Do you remember that nursery rhyme? I'm not sure of the country of its origin, but I think it can have meaning everywhere. My mom's recitation usually falls in her advice category of "wishing" doesn't make things happen; you have to get out there and go for it.

She's probably right, but a little "wishing" can't hurt once in a while. For many of you, it may be your time of giving to others and finding out their wishes certainly does help. For example, I'm wishing for some of these rustic rubies that went in the Magpie Gemstones store this week. Those colors fit quite nicely with what I'm wearing this time of the year.

OR . . . since I have a January birthday, some garnets are always something nice to wish about. When you wear your birthstone, no matter what it is, I find it interesting how many people notice and tell you its also their birthstone. Hmm . . perhaps that's a new way to meet people.

Shades of red also adorn the Magpie tree this year. We might have guessed that it would be decorated with gemstones. Garlands of turquoise and pearls set the background for lovely charms made with muscovite. I have to admit, I've never seen one like it.

In a Hurry

It seems that people spend a good deal of time rushing around in December. I made what should have been a quick trip to a discount store yesterday and was amazed at all the scurrying folks. At first I thought I might just turn around and go home, but finally I just jumped right in a hurried around with them.

Some other people have also been hurrying online. I returned home to find the Magpie Gemstones weekly newsletter on my computer and before I could order the gem I wanted, someone beat me to it. This used to bother me, but now I realize that the gemstones Magpie sells are truly exceptional and I'd better hurry up if I want to have them. I'm not going to find the same stones on every bead corner. This is the opposite of what worries me when I purchase a dress at a local boutique. With the dress, I worry about whether my friend will buy the same thing and we will end up wearing it at the same function. (Ok, you men reading this will not understand!) Obviously, this isn't going to happen with the beads from Magpie Gemstones. Even if a friend and I purchase the same strand, we each create our own unique design.

You might want to be in a hurry to pick out some of the beautiful new beads that went in to the store recently. I'm partial to the iolite briolettes shown below.

If you really like blue, hurry online and looks at the saphires too. They are quite yummy! You might also consider the tourmaline. Any of these would be appreciated as a gift in a necklace for someone or simply as loose gemstones for your beady friend.

Szarka had to do a bit of hurrying when a cold snap hit central Texas this week. Have you ever tried to cover a garden in sheets with a strong wind pelting you in the face? She says it's not a pleasant experience. I sure hope that garden appreciated her efforts. I also hope no one gets depressed since the backyard now looks like a morgue.

Cyber Every Day

Did you take part in Black Friday or Cyber Monday for shopping this year? Every year I think I should get busy and take advantage of these two events, but I usually wait until the last minute for my shopping. I'll have to admit that much of my shopping and wish list centers around beads and new tools that I've had my eye one. My friends know and expect something handmade and a girl has to shop for components. Right? What I've discovered about cyber "this and that" is I don't have to have an event to get the same great prices on my gemstones at Magpie. With just a few mouse clicks I can get the beads I want at the best prices. I don't have to wait for a sale. At Magpie Gemstones, I guess I could say it's "Cyber Every Day" all year.

Here's an example of what I mean. Did you see the Hubei turquoise oval cabachons available for just $4.99 each? Let's keep that quiet since I think Szarka must have made a mistake pricing them.

I also think that the gorgeous druzy freeform cabs make super gifts when wrapped in sterling wire. Actually, I've got a couple of friends who would be pleased just to receive the cab and then do their own things. Be sure to note the sparkle in the photos of these pieces.

The Pietersite cabs are perfect for someone who has everything. This stone is probably less familiar to most and don't we always want something different?

Wrappings

'Tis the season to think about wrappings. I've noted people in stores picking out wrapping paper and ribbons for holiday packages and see that celophane tape is in big demand. I wish I could say I was close enough with my shopping to think about that kind of wrapping. Unfortunately, I'm still thinking about wrapping gemstones in preparation for their later wrapping as gifts.

I was pleased to find that Magpie Gemstones could save me some time if I purchased Moldavite stones. These come already wrapped in sterling silver - what could be simpler than to put these on a chain, leather or neckwire? The moldavite comes in an array of intriguing shapes that make these pendants even more interesting.

If you would prefer to wrap your own cabs, I suggest you step into the fire and try a Mexican Fire Agate. These beauties are a favorite of many and you'll want to grab them quickly for wrapping with copper or silver wire. I like to peruse the various online jewelry venues such as Etsy and Artfire to garner new ideas for wrapping cabs.

Thankful

Have you been to the grocery store in the past few days and tried to get down the turkey isle? I don't know when I've seen so many people digging in the frozen foods before. I'm really glad I purchased my turkey a couple of weeks ago. If you didn't, I suggest you eat ham on Thanksgiving Day.

My grocery trip made me very glad that I don't have to fight other jewelry designers to get my beads from Magpie Gemstones like you have to fight for a turkey at the grocery store. I like going online and picking the gemstones out at my leisure. I'm wondering if next year the company could offer turkeys that way.

As I did that leisurely online shoppping with Magpie this week, I became focused on greens.

I hope you, too, noticed the gorgeous and rare gaspeite cabs that are available. The colors are just right and I'm thankful they're not too bright. The mottled tones can be complemented by a number of other beads. Now the question remains as to whether the gaspeite cabs should be wire wrapped in sterling silver or copper. Hmmm . . .

The other green that I especially like in the online store is aventurine. Look at the carving of an owl and a leaf below and think about the various ways they can be used in designs. "Whooooo" wouldn't want an owl in such a great color? I'm thankful to have all these green choices.

Findings

Today, I wanted to mention one of the "findings" that I discovered when I first started shopping with Magpie Gemstones. One of my favorite things about the companies' available products are the copper findings that I can always order. A few of these are pictured here and the website shows you so many more. I don't know about you, but I find it really nice to have so many different choices in copper.

You could discover a finding of your own if you ventured out to visit with Kateri at the Dallas Gem and Mineral Show in Mesquite, Texas, November 19-10. Coming Together

This is the time of the year when friends, family and groups we work with are planning how they will come together to rejoice in the season. It's a fairly peaceful time at Magpie Gemstones when the shows and visits to Canada are over for the year and everyone is at home. Coming together means time to reflect, drink lots of coffee and appreciate our companies' super customers.

It's also a great time to dig into the beads and see what beauties we've yet to offer you. Although we continually add beads each day, there are always more that immerge. Where do they all come from? Oh yes, I do remember those hundreds of pounds of beads in boxes that arrived a few months back. I'm particularly enamored with the three colors of Kiwi that went into the store this week. Look at the rich colors on all of these! I just ordered a number of new beads strands for myself on Friday, but (note to self) I must go back and order Kiwi.

I hope that your designs for the holiday are all coming together. Whether you string, work with wire or hammer metal, it's a great time to share your talents. Your talents and our beads should come together nicely in those designs.

Disguises

This is the time of the year for disguises. I don't know if you will receive this blog entry before or after Halloween, but either way I'm wondering. Are you reading this while you eat Halloween candy? Whether it's leftover candy or you find yourself eating the good stuff before the date, Halloween candy is hard to resist. Unfortunately, for some of us, extra pounds are disguised as seemingly harmless goodies.

Of course there are other disguises this time of the year. Some children dress in costumes while parents pretend they are just disguised because the kids wanted them to be. Do you really believe that? I think the parents just disguise the fun they are having.

Magpie Gemstones even got into the spirit this year and offered specials on certain orange and black gemstones. I wasn't fooled at all by this. They can call it a Halloween special, but it's simply a good deal disguised as something else.

If you don't need orange or black, perhaps you would enjoy grabbing something in green. Some unikite beads just went into the online store and I'm really pleased to see the enticing shapes. Not only are there some gorgeous faceted stones, you can also find several types of large hole beads for your designs. I don't know about you, but I really like a bead that I don't have to struggle with to put on wire. These unikite beads look like winners to me.

This week finds Magpie owner, Szarka, and the littlest Magpie back home from their trip to visit family in Canada. There's no disguising the fact that we are all glad to have them back. It's fun to get away, but even better to get back home.

I hope that this Fall season rich with beautiful colors finds you making beautiful jewelry. We can't disguise the sense of accomplishment you likely get from this or the joy you can give others when they receive one of your gems.

Gem or Pearl?

Would you rather be a gem or a pearl? I know of people who use both of these terms to describe others and I've wondered if there is any difference in what they mean. I've been called a gem before, but never a pearl. Does that mean I'm not pure enough to be a pearl? Perhaps we shouldn't even think about that. Moving on . . .

I can tell you that Magpie Gemstones does have pearls as well as gems. Have you looked in the pearl section of the online offering lately? If not, I think you would be amazed by the plethora of offerings from which you can choose. Here's the problem. I can't decide which ones I need. Do I want the copper baroque rondells or the pink baroque rice pearls. Perhaps I should go with the cream baroque round pearls. I know! At these prices, I'll just get them all! Since I'm a gem, don't you think I deserve pearls?

Time to Bead

I always enjoy the beginning of Fall and the changing of the leaves is a big reminder that I should be planning ahead for Christmas shows and gifts. I've got to carve out even more time to bead. Luckily, Magpie Gemstones allows me to get the beads I need quite quickly so I can keep my momentum going.

New pendants went into the online store this week and I'm thinking just how quickly I can make these into beautiful necklaces. The two shown here are abalone and shell inlaid pendants all set to hang on a chain, leather or bead strand. People seem to love these year round and they come to us at a good price from Magpie.

I'm seeing a strong leather bracelet trend this year and was pleased to find these flourite big hole beads in stock at Magpie. I don't know about you, but I used to find it difficult to gather beads to go on leather. The holes tended to be too small, but these are great and the colors are nice also. I can use the larger gauge wire with these and I'm also thinking about stringing them on leather with knots between each bead. There are so many possibilities.. . how can I decide?

On the Road Again

Did you ever feel like you just couldn't quite keep up? I reminds me of an old joke about a baseball game that asks "who's on first?" It's been that kind of week at Magpie Gemstones where you wondered why someone was packing the car, where the show van was headed and I hoped I knew where I was supposed to be. Luckily, everyone knew just what they should be doing and it seems to have all worked out fine. Here's the scoop: Szarka and daughter are driving to Canada to visit family, Kateria just finished a bead show for the Hill Country Bead Society retreat, I just taught two classes at the same retreat and in between we took and filled your orders. Why, we looked like a well-oiled machine! Magpie Gemstones took care of all the tasks.

One of the joys of having an online business comes from the ability to continue functions as long as you can access the internet. Magpie Gemstones makes sure there is someone available to package and mail orders that come through no matter what other tasks others are undertaking away from the bead stock.

Meetups

Do you "meetup"? When I first encountered Magpie Gemstones, owner Szarka talked about meetups and I thought that was just her Canadian adaptation of some other word. Then I learned that meetups are a good thing.

Sometimes people bring new beads to a meetup and query how others think they might use them in designs. It's a great way to get ideas and gather enthusiasm for a project. For example, have you seen the fetish necklaces at Magpie Gemstones? I've gathered all manner of ideas for how to use the fetishes from the necklaces for new designs. One year a meetup buddy suggested I use them for key fob embellishments. I shudder to think how many of those I made and sold. Now I'm repeatedly taking them apart to make multistrand necklaces like the one shown below. Just think of all you can do with these. You can, of course, just leave the necklace alone and wear it! You'll get many comments about it! They are temporarily strung on string so one day they will probably come aprt but that's ok since then you get to make something new!

How about showing your meetup friends what you can do with beads from the multistones strand? These are rather inexpensive and can stand alone in a piece or be divied up into multiple designs. They are especially nice in earrings because the variety of stones makes the earrings quite versatile. I like to dangle several different stones from a jump ring and simply attach that to an earwire. Why not put several on a piece of chain and hang that from an earwire?

Unplanned learning also often occurs at a meetup. Perhaps one person brings a "show and tell" piece and people wonder how in the world it was created. This may lead to an impromptu explanation/demonstration of a particular weaving or other technique followed by attempts by others to recreate it. Leaves

Writing beside my office window, I can't help noticing the strong wind pushing through the trees. The leaves are still hanging on, but it won't be long before the winds of Fall will push them off the branches. In a few weeks it will be time to get outside and notice the Fall colors that are abundantly displayed in the leaves. I think those colors provide great inspiration for creating beautiful jewelry for the upcoming season.

Magpie Gemstones just happens to have leaves available for us in clay. Speaking of leaf colors, you can see some of them in one of the photos in this week's article. It is the second part of creating multistrand jewelry and focuses on using connectors and separators. I'd like to suggest you "leaf" through the jasper section of Magpie Gemstones on line. Many of the colors in the jasper stones are reminders of the vibrant Fall spectrum coming our way. I think you could find some great stones that would work well alone or with the leaves from Clay Genie.

Although there are many other ways to talk about leaves, I wouldn't want to be corny and ask you to "turn over a new leaf" by trying a stone from Magpie Gemstones that you have never used before. It would also be pretty silly to stretch this and say you don't want to be left "leafless" without any beads at the great prices Magpie offers. So, I'll just leaf on out of here.

Heating Up

You probably know that Magpie Gemstones is in the heart of Texas, but you may not know that we are breaking record temperatures right now. The weather person predicts 109 degrees for today and we've had over 70 days of 100 plus degrees this summer. This heat and the drought along with the small fish pond near the door of Magpie land attracts interesting critters. One discussion this week pertained to whether the long snake in the little pond was a good snake or a water moccassin. We're still trying to figure that one out. I think you're supposed to examine the snakes eyes to determine the answer, but we have not decided which one of us is going to get close enough to do that! Any volunteers?

We did much better getting close to and personal with the new beads that went into the store this week. We're pleased to have Gibby back from his trip and available to take pictures for you. I think he might be partial to the turquoise and this week quite a few new strands of it are available for you. Below you see Turquoise Hubei Heishis and Turquoise Ma"an Shan Nuggets. These would heat up most any of your designs.

I also wanted you to see the Baltic Amber that's available. These are really nice colors. While I'm stuck in the house away from the heat outside, I'm contemplating the interesting ways I might use this amber.

Leather Anyone?

I wanted to use this venue to let you know about Magpie Owner Szarka's video on YouTube where she shows us how to incorporate leather into our jewelry designs. For some time I avoided using leather in my designs because I didn't know what to do with it. This video shows just how easy it is to use leather and acquaints viewers with the many options for using it in designs. I now use leather often, but watched the video and it sparked several new ideas I want to try. Did you know you can even use leather in earrings? I'll be trying that one today. Here's my question about the video Szarka made on using leather. Why would a woman who makes her living selling beads show us a way that can save us money on our designs by using leather? Wouldn't you think she would want us to need as many beads as possible? I'm priviledged to have been acquainted with the Magpie Gemstones company long enough to realize that they truly want to help us as artists. Leather is a viable design element that can add interest and change the look of our pieces. Yes, it's true that means we may need less beads for a piece, but Magpie Gemstones simply wants to help us get better at what we do. I, for one, appreciate this attitude and look forward to whatever artistic help the company can share with us.

The next gem show date for Magpie Gemstones is the Enid Gem and Mineral Society show in Enid, Oklahoma. It will be held September 16-18.

On a sad note, two Magpies have been out of town this week attending an out of state funeral for a young family member. As usual, Szarka and Kateri have manned the fort well, but look forward to returning to normalcy by next Wednesday. If you've not seen quite as many informative posts this week you will now understand this reason for this.

Beads, Beads and More Beads

The beads are here!!! I mentioned in the last blog entry that Szarka had been on a buying trip. It's always exciting to receive the results of her trip and this year, the boxes of beads came on a big truck. You can see the large number of boxes in the photo below and get a bit of an idea of just how many beads have arrived. I can truly appreciate the effort it takes to get the beads inventoried, photographed, described, priced and finally into the online store. This process will obviously take a while, but I hope you will watch for the new beauties.

One of the Magpie customers (Dora) volunteered to help Kateri with the show in Mississippi and we were able to get a photo of them setting up. Do they look like they know what they are doing? Of course they do! Kateria always does a good job for us. She loads, unloads, sets up the booth and is even friendly to the customers. The latter is really the most important thing.

I hope you had a chance to look at the new article/tutorial we published this week about multistrand necklaces. I certainly learned a great deal putting it together for you and hope it will be helpful. Things That Fly

The title of this blog entry might suggest a contest. OK. How many things that fly can you list in two minutes? But, who wants to do that? I'd rather think about things that flew at Magpie Gemstones this week.

The most important things that flew this week were Magpie owner Szarka and the littlest Magpie. They flew away on a buying trip and I can hardly wait to learn what they found for us. We'll have to wait for the delivery truck to actually see the beads. Time after time, I am amazed at the variety of excellent quality beads that Szarka procures for the online store. After working with beads for so many years, you'd think I'd seen it all, but she always manages to surprise me. From some stones that I've never heard of to familiar ones in new shapes and sizes, the beads continue to bring life and add to the myriad of possibilities for our designs.

While the beads shown here didn't come from the trip this week, they do represent the description above - good quality, unusual type and interesting shapes. I continue to marvel at the beauty of green amber shown here in a single bead. The unikite has also been popular with my customers and these shapes come together very nicely. Don't wait to long to get the beads you want from the website. They fly right out of here and are seldom seen again when they're gone.

Here in Texas, we would really like for this hot dry weather to fly away. I hope you can see the five turkey gobblers that are spending time here on our property. The photo is pretty dark, but I promise - they are there and "NO" they are not for Thanksgiving.

Since we gave up on making that list of things that fly, why don't we just make a list of beads we want to fly from Magpie Gemstones to our mailboxes. That sounds like more fun to me. Let's see now . . . amber, amythest, carnelian, turquoise . . .

Isn't it wonderful how most jewelry designers enjoy sharing techniques and ideas? We gather in small gangs, chat in internet groups, share internet links with one another and help friends with techniques. I had never heard the term "meetup" until I started making jewelry. Now, it's one of my favorite words!

Magpie Gemstones makes a real effort to contribute to the sharing that is part of making jewelry. This week, Magpie owner, Szarka, is asking us what we want to see in terms of free video tutorials. Please speak up and let us know what techniques you would like to see in these videos so that we can share with you.

While we're sharing, I wanted you to see the beautiful labradorite that is new in the store this week. This is one of the more popular stones and works for all seasons. I'm always amazed at how it picks up the light. Have you tried it?

Running Shoes

Have you noticed the large number of beads that have gone into the Magpie Gemstones' store this week? After the owners were gone on a buying trip and secured new turquoise beads, they came right home and put on their running shoes to get as much as possible into the store for us to see. It's been all business this week as new things were photographed, described and entered. I know we featured the turquoise in last week's blog, but I wanted to be sure you didn't miss seeing these graduated beauties. Yes, I just had to get some for myself and I'm going to need more! Get them before I do . . . want to race?

If I were you I would run right over to the computer and pick out one of the Titanium Druzy pendants set in sterling silverthat are available. I purchased something similar to this a few months ago and I thought there was going to be a fight between two customers regarding who saw it first. These are especially nice because they come complete with bail and are ready to go. How easy is that?

I think that Kateri, who helps fill the orders, even put on her running shoes this week to help get all the orders right out. Actually, she's always running to get these off to you and I believe Magpie is among the very few online stores that gets orders in the mail immediately. That makes a big difference to me because when I buy beads I want them Right Now! Don't get in Kateri's way when she's headed to the post office with your orders. She's a gal on a mission.

Kateri and Szarka will be running off to Mississippi in just a few weeks for the next bead show. They hope you'll come visit them on August 12-14 for the Harrison County Gem & Mineral Society Show at Pass Christian, MS.

Teasing?

Are any of you old enough to remember when Cabbage Patch dolls first came out? Every little girl just had to have one and supposedly the factory just couldn't make enough so they were in short supply. Parents stood in long lines that began predawn for the slim chance of snagging one for a child. Perhaps you're more aware of the current generation who has waited in line for a new Harry Potter book or an IPad II. I always wondered if the manufacturers were just teasing us by saying their supply wouldn't meet the demand. It made many of us that more eager to make a purchase. I have always wondered if the hoopla was just a big tease and there was more product available than the manufacturers released.

What if I said that Magpie Gemstones has this great new turquoise but you can't have it right now? I might even allude to the possibility that it could be in short supply. Would that also be a tease? Yes and no. The Magpie owners went on a quick buying trip last week and came home with a huge amount of new gorgeous turquoise. When Szarka opened just one box to show me some of it, I was flabergasted by the quality of the strands. I hope that I didn't actually drool on any of them. Why, there was enough turquoise that we could have emersed the youngest Magpie in it just as you bury people in the sand on the beach (for fun, of course).

So, the point is that The Turquoise is Coming and I'm not teasing. The current supply looks good, but you should get what you want when you see it. Watch for it to go into the store just as quickly as the pictures have been taken and information put on the website. I think you will be pleased with both the quality and the price of the new beauties and I'm NOT teasing!

Learn with Us

If you have read our blog previously, you know that I'm Dr. Karen and I write for Magpie Gemstones. Yet, that's not how I found my way into this company. I started as a learner. After purchasing beads from Magpie, I discovered the wealth of information that is available on the company website. Have you looked at all the free information that's yours for the taking? I found it to be quite helpful.

I've been fortunate in being asked to write a number of articles about making and selling jewelry and I hope you have also seen some of these. For example, did either the article on patinas http://www.magpiegemstones.com/copper_patina.html or the riveting article http://www.magpiegemstones.com/rivitinng__cold_connect.html help you?

I also learned a tremendous amount from writing the website's stone properties, found in the About Gemstones section http://www.magpiegemstones.com/properties.html . It was really interesting to learn where various stones come from and I finished with a new respect for many of them. This week, Szarka threw me a loop when andalusite appeared in the new beads. At first glance, I thought it was smokey quartz. See what you think from the photos below.

Anadalusite, a metamorphic mineral, is shown in the first photo. It was first found in Spain and contains dark inclusions of carbon or clay. Wikipedia tells us that the faceted stone gives off red, green and yellow. Who knew??? I guess this is a chance for us to learn even more simply by looking at the beads. I can do that. What a deal!

By the way, many of the articles and tutorials that appear on the Magpie Gemstones website were initiated by you, our readers. Your questions prompt our thinking and research followed by an honest effort to help you. Please don't ever hesitate to write and pose questions about beads, jewelry making or selling jewelry. Think Fall

It's supposed to be 104 degrees here in South Texas today and here I sit trying to plan for Fall. Many of you will get wrinkled brows considering the idea of thinking about Fall right now. Maybe you just got into your bathing suit and are still trying to figure out how to handle this summer's activities. After all, it's only June. Yet, if you vend at any Fall events, it really IS time to think Fall. These shows usually start in late September and early October. If you are trying to think about filling a booth with your treasures, it's time to start.

Luckily Magpie Gemstones is ready to help us out. I'm drawn to brown and black for Fall creations and am going to grab some of the new beads in the store. Why not take a peek at the Black Tourmaline, Black Agate and the Black/Brown Agates that are available? I can visualize these will all sorts of Fall creations.

I think there is a saying about how "the family that plays together stays together". At Magpie Gemstones, we could write that saying several different ways, but the results would still be positive. Just in case you don't already know, let me tell you about the business.

Magpie Gemstones is the epitome of the family run business. Everyone in the family is involved in some capacity and each person takes his or her role quite seriously. I guess that's why it works. Observing this family business for several year, I am struck most by the their ability to work hard all day and then enjoy one another's company at night. They seem to do a good job of keeping the business in perspective with family life.

Since I've run a cattle business with my husband for the past 13 years, I can truly appreciate how well all those Magpies work and play together. There is just that one thing. During a meeting last week, the youngest Magpie suggested they take more time off, but don't worry, following careful consideration of this suggestion, the elders prevailed and you will still be receiving your orders promptly.

You might want to think about ordering some of the gorgeous pendants made by Clay Genie that just went into the store. Things That Grow

The sun is out and the weather's hot in Texas, but things are thriving at Magpie Gemstones. I snapped this photo yesterday during a meeting at the headquarters. Look at their great garden! Those green plants seem to be quite happy living only a few feet from all the beautiful beads. As I looked at the lush plants, I couldn't help but wonder what critters might lurk beneath those leaves.

Perhaps a turtle would enjoy the shade . . . or . . . I've actually seen the big Magpie cat walking amongst the greenery. We can only imagine other animals that could lounge within this garden.

Although I haven't heard of any bears in these parts, you just never can tell what might show up.

As you can see, I've grabbed photos of some of the wonderful fetishes that are available at Magpie Gemstones. I just wanted to be sure you hadn't missed looking at these on the website. Honestly, when I first examined these I wondered what in the world I would do with them; but years later, I can truthfully say I've used them repeatedly in necklaces, on key and cell phone fobs, for purse charms and many other things. Folks are usually attracted to these creatures and they hold deep meaning for some. Imagine what you might do with them.

Girls and Pearls

Summer is upon us and with it comes all those summer weddings. Were you a June bride or groom? Mine was a late May wedding as we squeezed it in between college semesters. Tomorrow, I will have had the same roommate for 43 years.

When a bride to be asks me to design something for her weddings, I reach for pearls. These seem to be a standard for perfect wedding necklaces for bride and bride's maids. I remember struggling one year to find enough pearls just alike to make 8 necklace and earring sets for the wedding party. I wish I'd had Magpie Gemstones to call on back then. A Few of My Favorite Things

Although many new beads have recently gone into the store, I particularly wanted to share two of my favorites with you. Magpie Gemstones previously had something similar to these and I have used them repeatedly. The first is orange spiney oyster. http://www.magpiegemstones.com/catalog/item/6181113/8814034.htm I think I've used spiney oyster chips in this color, but these buttons look even more yummy. These are wonderful as a single strand or in a mixed strand with various gemstones. I particularly like this spiney oyster with turquoise, lapis, amethyst or some combination of these. I also wanted you to see the yellow jade rounds that are in the store. http://www.magpiegemstones.com/catalog/item/5238496/8820196 It's hard to believe the great price on these 8 mm rounds ($2.69), but this allows us to rather inexpensively create something nice with multiple strands. I think you'll find this color works well with a plethora of other gemstones.

One of my favorite design techniques is also featured in a tutorial I just finished that Szarka put online this week. This one takes you on a pictorial journey through riveting. What's a Picture Worth?

Answering the title question, you may be thinking a picture is worth "a thousand words". I could spend many words telling you about the beautiful new beads that went into the store this week, but how about a couple of pictures?

These are topaz Swiss blue cabachons and I think the color is outstanding. They make me want to burst into song about blue. Let's see; isn't there one about being blue because somebody left?

Enough of that . . . I guess the next question for today's blog entry should be "what's worth more than a picture?" Think about it . . .

The informative articles we add to the website from time to time are usually predominantly words and provide as many pictures as possible. This week, however, Szarka answered the above question regarding what might be worth even more than a picture by saying "a video!" If you happen to be reading this on Mother's Day, we wish you a happy one. We've not only been celebrating Mother's Day, but also a birthday this week. Gibby added another year to his counting. We gals are glad to have him around to help keep us on track. Thanks Gibby!

Moving Along

We've certainly moved along into the dry, warm season here in central Texas. The garden behind Magpie Gemstones would be happier if it would rain, but the store dog, Sandy, is having a great time keeping the opossums out of the yard. I think she's on a real mission! The score is Sandy = 3, oppossums = ?

I caught up with Kateri at the Magpie Gemstones booth at the San Antonio show yesterday. My feet were already hurting from walking around, yet she was full of energy and spunk, working with one customer after the next. It was fun to watch her help one in particular match a pair of earrings to stones for making a necklace. Kateri really knows her stuff! I think this woman smiles all the time!

Happy Easter to everyone. Are you tempted by all that candy reaching out to you in the stores. I've been trying to look the other way, but once in a while some of the chocolate just hops right in my shopping cart.

I hope you have successfully hopped into the Spring jewelry making season. It seems like summer here in central Texas with 90 degree temperature some days, but people are still buying their Spring fashions. The boutiques here know that once those folks get home with new clothes, they'll need to hop back in and get some great jewelry to go with their fashions. It's a good time for those of us who sell jewelry to have plenty available. One of my favorite ways to start designing jewelry is to begin by viewing the new clothing in the stores. It's also a nice way to be assured of what color combinations are hot right now. Then I can go right on line to Magpie Gemstones and find beads to match.

Kateria was pleased to see so many people who came out to the show in Alpine, Texas last week. Thanks to all of you. Central and South Texans have a chance to hop on over this coming weekend for the San Antonio Bead and Ornament Society show. This will be April 30-May 1 at the Live Oak Center in Live Oak, Texas on the outskirts of San Antonio.

This and That

This has been a nice normal week at Magpie Gemstones, except for that birthday party involving six little girls and a sleep over. I've never fully understood why it's a "SLEEP" over.

We've been taking pictures of new beads, writing their descriptions, pricing them at something fair for you, and getting them online. One of the new items is this gorgeous malachite oval bead. Every day we fill orders and rush to the post office so you can get your beads as expediently as possible. How are we doing?

One challenge for Szarka this week has been creating a rosary for a jewelry customer. I believe that learning and creative thinking have come together in this piece. It isn't quite finished, but I thought you would enjoy seeing it at this stage. I, for one, like getting my beads from someone who is actively involved in the design and creation process.

One of the things I like best about our Magpie owner's designs is her attitude about sharing. Szarka says we can copy her work shamelessly and she kindly shares with us as we do with her in the client's blog (www.turquoisemagpie.blogspot.com/) Through this exchange we all get better. It's a nice community atmosphere in which to work.

Speaking of work, I hope that you have had a chance to read the article I wrote about Lead in Jewelry. (www.magpiegemstones.com/lead_content_in_jewelry.htm) I wasn't overly interested in the topic when I initiated the article, but quickly realized that I should be paying attention. I knew that lead was a definite issue in children's toys, but knew less about its presence in jewelry. I certainly would not want my jewelry to cause a health problem for anyone and I'm thinking we all need to look after each other. Once again, it all goes back to buying from an honest bead supplier and trusting that company to look after business. Looking after business has to go past the green dollar and into caring about customers. Hmm . . . wonder if I know any company like that . . .? Hint, hint, the name initials are MG - tweet, tweet.

Growing Up

It's hard to believe that magpiegemstones.com is just a youngster. The online business started a mere 4 years ago. Although it's not the companies' birthday, the littlest magpie is moving into double digits with her special day this week. Happy Birthday Tera!

By the way, she's the real gem and the one on the left in the photo. That's Sandy Magpie beside her. Sandy provides special accoustical accompaniment if you knock on the door at the worksite. I try not to have to knock!

Speaking of "other" Magpie pearls, I think you could say it's the birthday for many strands of them this week also. Some of the newer ones include these girls. Look at the pearl page online to see all the colors available at really good values. One of my jewelry customers always wants gemstones with pearls and the beavy of pearls available at Magpie right now has been a big help.

Did you read the article "All Pearls Are Not Created Equal" posted a couple of weeks ago. It was very interesting to write and I hope you find it informative. It certainly made me appreciate pearls that much more. Take a look and see how pearls have really grown up. By the way, there are other kinds of new beads also.

Part of growing up seems to be balancing family, friends and business. The beautiful Spring weather here in Texas brings that to the forefront with outdoor activities in full bloom. Don't worry, though, we're tending to business before we tend the garden and you will get your beads on time.

Keeping Up

It seems as though every person I've talked with in the last few days has been running. No, not the kind of running that keeps you fit, but the kind of running you do when you're trying to catch up with yourself. Maybe you have children and are trying to juggle all the school activities while maintaining some semblance of your jewelry making. Perhaps your customers have suddenly realized it really is Spring and they need new jewelry to perk them up. There's also the possibility that all manner of other activities have you running hither and yon.

Here at Magpie Gemstones, we feel like we've been running too. As I write this blog entry, I really wanted to show you the new stones that are going into the store, but I can't keep up. Every time I think I know just which pictures to show you, owner, Szarka, puts in more beauties and I'm afraid to show them to you for fear they will disappear before you read this. That's how fast things are moving around here. So, if you want some of the new stones, put your running shoes on and trot to the website to grab some. Here are just a very few of the new beauties. They are apatite, lemon quartz and multicolored spiney oyster, from left to right.

Spring Swimming

"Too cold for swimming?" No, not really. It's Spring! The birds are singing. The flowers and trees are budding. The pollen is flying and Magpie Gemstones is swimming in beads. So come on in, the water is fine!

As you know from last week's Tick Tock post, Magpie owner, Szarka, has been gone and has just returned from a big buying trip. This was a really, truly B I G buying trip. After a full week of anticipating her return from the trip, I then had to wait again for the beads to arrive. When the truck containing them got here, I thought the boxes would never stop coming out of it.There were 1100 pounds of beauties. Yesterday, I had an opportunity to finally see what came in the boxes and let me tell you, it was pretty cool! I wish I had a video to show you what I saw, but then you would have to listen to all my oohs and aahs as each bag of beads was opened. They were gorgeous - simply gorgeous and there was an excellent range of colors, types, sizes and prices. I think Szarka found something for each of us and this has left the entire staff swimming in beads. The photos display a mere a smidgen of what awaits us when the beads make their way into the Magpie store.

Are you drooling yet? My mind keeps racing back to the gemstones I saw and the myriad of opportunities they hold for making beautiful pieces of jewelry. I guess that means I'm just going to have to start that "tick, tock" again as I wait for the beads to show up on line. All I can say is I hope the staff can "work harder FASTER" so we customers can also be swimming in beads.

Tick, Tock . . .

I'm just sitting around waiting for Magpie owner, Szarka, to return from this week's buying trip in Los Angeles. Her facebook page has tempted us with a few of the goodies that she has acquired, but I want to get the whole story. It's always exciting to learn about the finds from these trips, but it does mean a rush at the job. For example, once the gemstones and other goodies arrives, they don't just hop right into the store. Everyone has their own job pertaining to the new beads and this can mean anything from completing the inventory, photoing the loot to writing the descriptions and getting them onto a webpage in the store. Whew, it's times like this that I'm glad I'm only the writer!

Have you looked at the green kyanite that is in the store now? It's a great color for this Spring when everything seems to be sporting at least a touch of green.

I worked with some Magpie blue kyanite last night and am ready to grab some of the green. You can see the beautiful blue kyanite creations of Bead Spirit Designs on the customer's blog at http://www.turquoisemagpie.blogspot.com/. My customers like kyanite largely due to the muted colors and because it has such a different look to the other gemstones. The more I write about it, the more I know that I'd better go get that green!

All is well on the home front this week where we find Mapie husband recovering nicely from his recent heart attack and everyone else holding their own. We hope you and yours are doing the same.

Exciting Week

If you have been reading the recent blog entries here, you have probably realized that I'm (Dr. Karen) writing for Szarka, allowing her more time to get all those great beads where we can all see them in her store. Since I'm not an owner, I am free to do a bit of bragging on the way things work at Magpie Gemstones.

(Come read about all of us if you have time. Our bios just went up on the site. We would love to meet you.)

As you may know Gibby, Szarka's hubby, who is home and doing well now, had a heart attack last week. I'm not telling you this to gain sympathy, but to remark about the fact that the business continued to flow perfectly even in time of difficulty.

Szarka obviously spent considerable time at the hospitol, yet she managed to keep facebook posts and newsletters going while Kateri diligently got our orders out and off to the mail on time. If I hadn't been privy to a phone call, I wouldn't have known what was going on. Kateria even got away to do a gem show in Pasadena, Texas, last weekend as Szarka returned to fill orders. A good working business stays oiled and moving even if something tries to upset the machine.

OK, that's enough accolades for one post. What about the beads? Have you seen the new azurite that just went into the store? I have to get some of them because I think they will work well mixed with the Spring colors or standing alone.

You might enjoy looking at the new article that just went onto the site this week. It pertains to what you might do if your muse leaves home and you are left without design ideas. The manner in which the article suggests you generate ideas may seem a bit farfetched, but I can assure you it works if you give it a chance. We'd enjoy seeing what you come up with.

More New Beads

Magpie is beginning to get many of the new beads from Tuscon into the store now. Have you looked at the website lately? It's pretty amazing to realize that there are about 250 different types of turquoise in the store. Would that be a "plethora" of opportunities for buyers? I think so!

The photos obviously show only a smattering or what's available, so why not take a moment and look at those "T" gemstones on the website?

One of my favorite new beads that went in the store this week is the blue tigereye. My current issue with these is trying to decide which of my design ideas I should start on for these beauties. Maybe I should just get started! I'm hoping to see lots of ideas when customers, like me, finish pieces and sent them to Szarka to go in the client's blog where she posts our designs.

By the way, there's a monthly meet up of wire workers that occurs in San Marcos, Texas each third Thursday. Szarka from Magpie Gemstones will be demonstrating how to make wire clasps this week and others will be showing links etc. as we put together handmade chains and belts. If you are in the area, let us know as we would be glad to see you. If not, I hope there is something going on in your area where you can share ideas with others. It can be quite invigorating.

New Beads, Bead Shows and More News

It's been a very busy couple of weeks at Magpie Gemstones. The company appreciated the great customer response to the 20% off sale and following its completion the owners were off to Tucson for the bead show. Business Cards

In one of the online jewelry making forums I belong to we are having a discusion about business cards. I uploaded pictures of my jewelry business cards here so I could show what I was talking about. The issue is shiny or not, hand printed or not, double sided etc ... you get the gist.

I get these from a company called http://www.gemgraphics.net/ ... they chose the pictures off my website and built the card, asked if it was ok and I had them in the mail pronto. Great company (watch for typos though), and inexpensive.

I believe the the photos of jewelry they chose had more to do with the background colors of their design working with the background color of the photos as opposed to what peices I would have chosen but because the decision was so hard for me I just went with it.

One of the discussions I hear often in jewelry making forums is the issue of pricing jewelry. Eventually it turns to how inexpensive jewelry on etsy is. A few people come to their defense that they are selling low to get their "sales" numbers up and will eventually return to a pricing system that is consistent elsewhere.

Huge Sale and a Bunch of New Beads

I am leaving for a trip to Canada, driving the whole way from South Texas. We use to live on the road and do the big trip twice a year but I have gotten out of the habbit.

How does this affect you? Well I got all of next weeks beads in early and have two sales happening at the same time because I can't do any website work for a week. You have to check out the new beads and focals and the Close Outs. I also had to do ended listing so a slew of popular sellers went back into stock. Either there were just a few more or I was able to get more.

Hate Mail

This week I have been busy measuring briolettes, taking pics and building listings. Some fantastic faceted drops will be heading in soon.

In the middle of Summer and at the beginning of Winter something interesting happens to the human race in this part of the world. We get crabby. I think it is the weather. We can set our calender to when we start receiving "hate" mail.

It's not really hate mail, just being crabby myself. This year to take out our frustrations in a healthy way we documented the crabby season in writing. Hope you enjoy. We got a chuckle out of it, and afterwards could put the smile back on our faces and deal with our humans in a good way.

How to Make Wire Hammereded Loops

This week was a busy one. We had a show in Pas Christian Mississippi. It was wonderful to meet the people there and amazing to see the country. I had never been East of Texas. The lush growth, alligators, and the people enchanted me.

The oil spill broke my heart and I probably asked more questons than the locals wanted me too but the counsellor in me dies hard. It was heart breaking and yet somehow uplifting to see the resiliancy of people. The town itself had been so torn by Katrina yet the community was still there.

Now that I am back I am busy putting new jewelry in the client's blog, putting Apatite on Close Out bead sale this week, and getting the next newsletter eady to go out.

I also uploaded a video I had on yout tube to the site on hammered loops if you want a peek.

I put a bunch of new beads in and more will go in this week now that I am home.

I am getting ready for my drive to Canada in September so I have to get ahead on a bunch of things so you should see an influx of new beauties in the shop.

It's raining Turquoise

We are doubling our turquoise line this week. We hand seleceted some sweet Natural and Stabilized North American and Chinese Shapes and Nuggets. Can I Make a Living Making Jewelry?

Faith Davis Ferris answers this question that is always on the mind of new jewelry makers. This was in response to a question in an online forum Wire Wrapped Jewelry. I asked her if I could share it with my clients. I thought her words were very good and succinct.

For my 2-5 cents I'll say what I think is true. You don't know till you try. Can you fail? Yes. It can also work. Marginally. Well. Very Well. That being said a couple of points.

First, you need to consider all the 'core' aspects and responsibilities involved in a small business start-up.

To begin you need to apply, process and complete any permit applications your state, town and in some cases HOA require. The actual permits, paperwork, requirements may vary so be sure to confirm with your state, county town, HOA* They many include and are not necessarily limited to: filing for DBA, sales tax certification and zoning to note a possible few.

Many of you have been following the saga. Magpie Gemstones gives away a $200 shopping spree twice a year as a promotion to get people to see us and engage. I would so much rather give my "advertising" dollar to our clients than to google (sorry google).

To make this happen we set up the rules that only those folks who see their name in the newsletter can collect their winnings. Well a giveaway in the middle of summer caused it to be a long process. So many folks gone on vacations, getting that rose bush to behave etc resulted in 8 winners being drawn until one finally opened up their email and read their name in the allotted 6 days.

Following your initial contact with a boutique or gift store, give the owner about a week to explore your website or any other information you provided. Then make a phone call to find out if the owner has found anything in that information that you might bring by the store. Do not expect the store owner to call you. Often, the person has not thought about or looked at the information you supplied. Your phone call is a chance for you to say that you understand how busy things get, but to say that you really wanted to let the person know about the new pieces you’ve done since you were in the store. Just talk about what you’re making and the enthusiasm you’ve received in other venues. Hopefully, the store owner will realize that you should bring your product to the boutique. If so, ask if there is anything in particular that you need to bring. For example, are customers looking for more bracelets or something in a specific color?

How do you organize your jewelry making supplies?

This is a question that comes up at least once a month in the jewelry making forums. Everyone has a bit of a different way it works for them. Somethings seem pretty universal after trial and error most people end up doing a few things the same.

This is my work bench. It is an old desk I didn't feel bad about hammering on. I made sure it was very sturdy since I didn't want any bounce back when I hammered. It is a heavy wooden desk with nice big drawers.

Lighting is important. I have two lights and then an over head on the ceiling. As I get older I think I might need a flood light too! The two lamps have daylight bulbs so I can see the colors I am working with as true as possible.

I didn't even clean up before I started this article. I thought about it but then changed my mind. This is how it looks all of the time. It may be creatively messy but it is organized. Well okay sometimes it looks even a bit more chaotic.

Beside my desk and my chair I have a book shelf. On the end I have hung nails and on each hook I hang all the gemstones of a certain color together. When I use some beads on a strand I just knot the strand again with the left over gemstones and hang it back on it's hook. I like this set up since then I can take the bead or pendant I am trying to match up and I can just run it past all the colors to see what works.

On the upper right corner you can see my two tins where I store my silver and copper scraps. I always plan to someday use them but the pile just seems to keep growing.

To my right is a box I keep the pendants I want to use next. On the top of the picture you can see some small white boxes. Those are the projects I am working on. They sit there ready for me so that when I sit down to work and I have no ideas there are a bunch ready. Looks like I seldom need to use them as they keep piling up as well.

The small round tin lid by my bench block holds a few of the things I always need; crimp beads, crimp bead covers, small round beads, my viking knit starter etc. . . Also any teeny metal beads get tossed in there.

Behind the wire jumble is a big wooden bowl where all my bead soup beads go. It was full. I just emptied 5 years worth of beads into a bag and gave them to my sister.

The same shelf to the right of my work bench holds the jewelry I recently made so I can look at it over a few days and see if I want to keep it as is or change anything. Eventually it goes into cases.

This is the same view of the recently finished pieces from my chair at the work bench.

On top and to the back of my work bench I put up this shelf that I can bang nails into to hang beads and my dremel. I also place finished jewelry there to inspire me and to look at them to see if I want to keep them as they are. I find I don't store much on the higher shelves since I can't reach it from my chair so it never gets back up there.

My drawers hide the real mess.

My top right drawers holds all the tiny findings like jump rings, crimp beads, clasps, beading wire, leather thong and small spacer beads.

The next drawer down holds all my base metal wire. Presenty all I have is copper, brass, steal, memory wire and a bit of colored artistic wire.

The drawer to my left holds everything that defys organization. Files, glue, markers, paste, wax, you get the idea.

The bottom drawer to my left houses all my sterling in big gallon baggies. Each is labeled by size and shape. I flop open the part I am working on and then when I am done with that bag I toss it into the opening. This system works better for me that using a file holder since I found I wouldn't get them back into the right spot. With this I do every time. I sort by shape (silver round) from smallest to largest. Then 1/2 round, then square. I also keep my shaped brass and copper in the back of the drawer organized the same way.

To the left of my bench is another shelving unit with even more nails to hang beads. When I get into making a piece I find I need to see as many beads as possible to really get the ideas rolling.

The shelf to my right holds my beads that have no strings or are pendants. My daughter helped me label them. I love her hand writing :)

On my desk and to the left I found this wire shelf (I stole it from my sister). It is iron and perfect for hanging my pliers, hammers etc from. The shelves store big and odd things like my tumbler, paint brushes, mandrels etc.

My pliers. I love my lindstroms. Before I bought them I worried I would have to stop working with wire because of the pain in my hands. I have not had that problem since I started working with them.

Out of that mess sometimes comes beauty. That is the most amazing thing I think.

Predicting jewelry fashion trends is always an interesting endeavor. For years I was always ahead of the trends and thought I had some sixth sense knack for what would be hot. My ego took a tumble when I realized what was hot was what people were making and it all starts with supplies. What ever is discounted and in mass quantity at the gem and bead shows is what will end up being the fashion trend. Ended up that I was not some jewelry Nostradamus but that I was cheap!

That said there is also a trend I have noticed over the many years that I have been making jewelry. If jewelry is tiny and feminine one year the next the swing will be to the other extreme. Also different parts of the country will pick up fads faster or slower than other parts. The usual chain of events is it is fashionable in Europe a few years before the states. It's also is picked up quicker on the coasts and may take a few years to make it over to the center of the country. Good news for people in Texas since they just have to watch New York and LA. Not so easy for LA people.

Even this is rule in the fashion industry is not always set in stone anymore with the level of social networking and internet communication. Designs and styles will take off and spread much more quickly.

Even so what you make as a jewelry designers might get eaten up by clients' but if you are selling to a store or gallery you still have to appeal to their like and dislikes or your pieces won't get in the door.

What I see as being hot this summer is long, think 20's flapper double over chain and wired in gemstones long. Layers and combining will be happening and long can be added to anything.

Multi strand will be big, especially with chain.

Feminine yet bold. Geometric designs and the less traditional.

Alternative metals are still receiving open arms with the high cost of silver and gold. By that I don't mean the client doesn't want to pay but the designers don't so as long as they are all kicking out alternative metals it will remain a trend.

Most importantly make items that are uniquely yours. Do not try to copy what you see but make what is in your heart and you will find your niche.

Disc Turquoise in Jewelry

The new rondelles (discs) hand rolled by Bill are in the store and questions are coming in asking "how" would you use them. I like them on big necklaces with bead caps on each end strung with leather as in this necklace.

I did a bit of google searching and found a few designers doing some really interesting designs with discs. Here is one. Her name is Sante Me . Amazing designs.

Bead Arts has a beautiful necklace as well with an intriguing design.

Coppers

The major uses of pure, unalloyed copper are based on its high electrical and thermal conductivity as well its good corrosion resistance. Almost all alloying elements are detrimental to the electrical conductivity of copper, making the purity of the mental an important issue. Commercially pure copper is represented by UNS numbers C10100 to C13000. The various grades of unalloyed copper differ in the amount of impurities and therefore do behave differently. Copper Production from Ore to Finished Product

4b. Smelting
Several stages of melting and purifying the copper content result, successively, in matte, blister and, finally, 99% pure copper. Recycled copper begins its journey to finding another use by being resmelted.

5b. Electrolytic Refining
Anodes cast from the nearly pure copper are immersed in an acid bath. Pure copper ions migrate electrolytically from the anodes to "starter sheets" made from pure copper foil where they deposit and build up into a 300-pound cathode. Gold, silver and platinum may be recovered from the used bath.

6. Pure Copper Cathodes
Cathodes of 99.9% purity may be shipped as melting stock to mills or foundries. Cathodes may also be cast into wire rod, billets, cakes or ingots, generally, as pure copper or alloyed with other metals.

7. Cathode is converted into:
* Wire Rod - Coiled rod about 1/2" in diameter is drawn down by wire mills to make pure copper wire of all gages.

Copper Circuits Help Brain Function; Could Tweaking the Circuits Make Us Smarter? September 26th, 2006 in Medicine & Health / Research

The flow of copper in the brain has a previously unrecognized role in cell death, learning and memory, according to research at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. The researchers' findings suggest that copper and its transporter, a protein called Atp7a, are vital to human thinking. They speculate that variations in the genes coding for Atp7a, as well as other proteins of copper homeostasis, could partially account for differences in thinking among individuals.

Scientists Find Key to Copper Absorption, Essential to Life

Humans, animals and plants require copper to live, and scientists have now discovered how cells absorb this mineral that fuels the brain, heart and other vital organs.

Knowing how copper enters cells could prove essential to treating copper deficiencies in humans, said the scientists from Duke University Medical Center who made the discovery. People derive copper exclusively from their diet. The mineral is found abundantly in shellfish, legumes, red wine, nuts, seeds and chocolate, among other sources.

Copper Compounds

It is worth noting that copper is an indispensable constituent of all living tissues and is essential for the normal growth and well being of plants and animals. Where it is lacking it has to be supplied. The minute quantities of copper needed for human health are usually obtained through the normal intake of food and water.

Copper and its compounds are not toxic like some other metals, such as lead or mercury. There are no records of any occupational diseases attributable to copper among people who have worked for many years with the metal or its salts. Indeed it has sometimes been said that such people often appear healthier and generally suffer less from colds and other ailments. Copper bangles and other adornments are reputed to relieve and prevent rheumatic pains. Copper water storage vessels, copper kettles and copper cooking pans have been used for generations.

To trace the history of copper compounds it would be necessary to go back much further than the fourth millennium BC. Records found in the tombs of the early Egyptians suggest that, at least, this ancient civilization employed copper sulphate as a mordant in their dyeing process. Today, more than 5,000 years later, copper sulphate is still employed by the world's dyeing industry in the after treatment of certain dyes to improve their fastness to light and washing.

Another equally early recorded use for copper compounds was for the making of ointments and other medical preparations.

PR - How do I get my jewelry business noticed online?

If you don't mind a couple of questions, I have read many of your newsletters and can't remember if this was addressed, but I just opened a "store" on artfire. I was wondering if there is a free way to advertise my site and to drive people to my site.

I did a search and there was a lot there, but I don't want to get pulled into a scam or a site that will use my e-mail to send me a lot of junk mail. I do this as a hobby in my retirement and don't have a large budget.

I do plan to use business cards and distribute flyers, perhaps see if I can have a drawing at a local specialty store....but that only gets me advertised locally. I have also asked all my friends to forward the artfire address to their friends, and have some friends on Facebook who have my link on their wall. I've been up for only a week, so I have been networking already.

Anita - thanks for bringing up this topic -

I have been meaning to write a post covering the Jewelry Marketing info I learned at the Tucson Gem Show...and you have given me the push I needed. So - some quick and easy things you can do:

1. Signature Line - You already have covered - this should be set to auto fill on EVERY email you send...you never know!

2. Web Presence - I happen to be partial to ArtFire - they have all the perks of an Etsy shop (they are a marketing machine) but right now you can still see the individual trees in this forest!

3. Tags or Keywords - this is one of the most important quick fixes - what do you think that someone looking for your jewelry would plug into a search engine to find you?

Be as specific as you can - it doesn't have to be a single word sometime a phrase is better "lavender crystal cube bracelet" or use the actual Swarovski color "Tanzanite crystal cube bracelet". The later would be especially good for someone how just discovered how expensive Tanzanite is and sees your piece as a great option!

This is a balancing act however as the search engines will penalize you for jamming lots of unnecessary key words into your site.

4. Blogging - I know, this can seem intimidating but a blog with your ArtFire shop Widget or a Slide presentation that directs people to your selling site can help in lots of ways. Look at this as your way to "stand in front" of your customer...tell the "story" of your piece - talk about the ancient beliefs about a certain color - tell about new techniques you are learning - show photos of things that inspire you (local weather, colors in a sunset, etc.) and the occasional baby and fur baby photo always makes the human connection stronger.

These posts need a photo and only have to be a paragraph or two - short and sweet! ...don't forget your Tags on your blog! The more often you update your blogs - the fresher the content - the higher your ranking in the search engines.

5. Social Media - there are lots of sites to post opinions, thoughts, etc. - don't limit yourself to jewelry sites - jewelers don't buy a lot of jewelry! FaceBook, MySpace, EONS, topics range from mommy sites to book sites...this is where a good intro and your signature line are important.

6. Press Releases - there are several local newspapers in every town - submit your own press release! It is Fashion Week - send out a release that talks about how your pieces work into the looks that are on the runway.

No paper is too small - and the smaller ones may need a Fashion/Image Editor! So - now that you are completely overwhelmed Anita - LOL!

Just tackle one thing at a time and you will see a difference in the number of hits in your shop!

When times are tough it is time to invest, not cut. This comes from years of research... All show that, if we cut marketing during such times, the impact is damaging and it can take you longer to get back to where you were.

Of course, this is easy to say, but harder to do. The Pavlovian reaction is to cut, but the media industry can learn from someone like Rupert Murdoch, who historically has never done that. You'll see him investing in editorial and products at a time when other people are throwing the baby out with the bath water. The talk to do ratio is high, the doing is low. (Marketoo)

This is what I was told when I started in the jewelry industry 20 years ago but in much simpler English. "We folk buy when things are goin' good and buy even more when we are goin' slow." I had to think about that statement for a few years before it made sense. On one level if I am doing great I need to replenish my stock. If I am not I need to get stock people will buy. When people are a bit more resistant to buying I need to trim costs as much as I can and offer better values. In essence, lower price points and more value.

My experience through a number of recessions is the lower priced items sell faster than the middle tier and the higher tier sell well since many people are more selective where they invest their money. I become more creative when things are slow. I look for avenues, venues, new opportunities. This is not the time to slow down.

The people who back off during slow economies leave room for those of us who are willing to work hard, be flexible, and creative. It is an opportunity to move to the front of the crowd while others are sitting still.

I look for the opportunities in any situation. Behind every apparent problem there is always at least one opportunity if not more. I always come out ahead and feel pretty darned good about doing so and if I can then anyone can.

Selling beads now is no different than selling jewelry etc.... I am buying up great deals when I can and passing the savings on. I have been careful and frugal with my business and my money and now I can offer specials to people during these economic times so we can all get through them and be ahead in the end. I have stayed true to high quality when so many others have started buying lower quality thinking people will lower their standards. They won't. They still want good quality and they want it for less!

Jewelry is an investment. It's an investment in metals, gemstones, and it is also an investment for people in themselves. During a downturn people stay closer to home, they focus on reevaluating their values and priorities. They focus on family and things that make life more beautiful in small ways. They take their family to town outings (festivals and art shows), they want to buy those things that are unique and special which is what hand crafted jewelry is.

Yes, the economy is down yet there are many ways to push ahead with a career in the jewelry industry during times like these. Keep focused on client's and what they desire. Hustle a bit more. Advertise more. Give loyal customers deals and secure your relationships. Keep quality high and they will remember you when things turn around. Lay a strong foundation. Get out there and do it! You will be ahead of the pack when the economy turns around this year.

No, I am not saying that you haven't done these things. I know you have. Now is just the time to do it more rather than sitting back waiting for the economy. We "are" the economy.

Where a friend of mine works the young people who own the business are so upset by the economy that they are sleeping in late and playing on their computers when they do come into work. The slow down of jobs coming in has them waiting for things to improve. Hopefully they will still be around when the economy does switch. How many jobs are they missing by not going out there asking for them?

Many people I know still can not find workers. There are opportunities but only for those that go after them.

William Murdoch ~ the process of making natural turquoise rondelles

William Murdoch is a rock hound and a professional bead and cabochon maker. He put together a pictorial documentary on his process and was kind enough to allow me to post it here for you. He walks through the process of making a natural Ithaca Peak rondelle necklace. Gorgeous.

I first got interested in turquoise when I was about 4 years old. I was born in Phoenix and then when I was two we moved to Michigan. My parents had turquoise jewelry and I was always fascinated by it. I was nine when we moved back to Phoenix, and on the way we stopped at a trading post in Tucumcari New Mexico. My sister got lightweight, linked concho belt and my dad wouldn't spring for the kind of concho belt I wanted to get, so I got a beaded belt with lots of turquoise color in it. My brother got one too but his had a lot of red.

In 1974, a friend of my fathers found turquoise south of Ajo, Az. Tom invited my dad and I and a couple other of my dad's friends to come down. We all went down there and Tom took us up the mountain and we all laid out individual claims ( but we all worked as one). We sent the rock in to a testing lab and it came back turquoise, however after many years experience I'm not sure what we were mining was turquoise, nor do I think it was variscite (way to hard), the only thing I can say to call it is Varicoise! But that was basically the start.

I've been working with turquoise on and off since 1974, whenever I could. I spent 16 years in the Marine Corps so I wasn't always able to work with turquoise. After we started mining it then we tried to sell it but in the 70's if it wasn't blue it wasn't turquoise and ours was green. Just after that I got into silversmithing and started putting my rock in jewelry (I'm doing that again too).

Here is the process for a hand rolled bead. This is natural Ithaca Peak. Start with turquoise flattened on both sides with a 2mm hole and dremel arbor.

Put the pin through the 2mm hole.

Screw the pin into dremel arbor.

Grinding will tear your skin off so you need a lot of finger protection.

First I apply cheap bandaids to my fingers.

Then I tape four layers thick on grinding hand.

I start by grinding off the edges on 60 or 80 grit wheel.

Then I continue to grind edges into a round form.

I work until I have a rough circle.

I keep working the rough circle into a finished circle.

I lightly grind until the thickness is the same around the pin.

The desired circle is completed when both sides of the bead are even.

The round bead is now in heishi form.

Here I am grinding the edges for a rondelle form.

Lightly grind both edges on the bead.

This is a side view after the rough grinding is over.

Finished rough grinding - top view. All of the steps then are repeated with sanding with 220, 400, 600, 1200, 3000 grits or more before polishing.

Here is the completed Ithaca Peak graduated rondelle necklace.

There is a lot of loss in beadmaking. I figure a 30% to 40% loss just in cabbing. With bead making, depending on the material (stabilized vs. natural) the loss can be as much as 70%.

Depending on the material it can take anywhere from a week to 6 weeks from start to a finished necklace. Some people could do it faster but I just cant sit that long so I do it in spurts. Stabilized turquoise is a lot easier then natural (in most cases).

The creation and trade of high grade turquoise is a passion of mine. I hope that by showing the process a few more people can understand why it is important not to support unscrupulous turquoise sellers that sell turquoise without telling people exactly what it is. As long as the seller is honest about what is being sold then the fake stuff has it's place in the market just like stabilized turquoise does.

North American Turquoise is all beautiful but I think my top choices would be all top grade; Lone Mountain, Paiute, Bisbee, Morenci, Godber/Burnham and Gold Acres. Although I'm very stirred by multi-colored Carico and lime green Orvil Jack and anything that I find in the ground.

I've recently been doing some digging at my Taubert Hills claim and eventually will have some really nice turquoise from that mine.

At times when the world is changing people get jumpy, scared, nervous. It is natural and normal. A new President is coming in. The economy has everyone talking and some worrying.

I do not fear what will come because there is no point to fear. It will not stop what will come and it may just get in the way of me being able to respond, response-able, if you will. In thinking about that and the interesting things people do when they become fearful of their future I remembered a poem by Mother Teresa.

It brings me peace and brings me perspective on the human condition. It helps me to forgive those who lash out in fear with their words or actions. It gives me the energy to keep taking risks, keep trusting new humans, and to keep going.

Just thought I would share.

Interview with Mike "Revluc"

I asked Mike, a client and someone I have been watching, if he would allow me to do an article on him. He has a genuine love for rocks, lapidary, and shows a real knack for putting his work into settings that are unique and creative. I think he will be someone to watch as his career takes off. Enjoy the article and the pictures of the beauty he creates (and go pick up some of his beautiful cabs on his etsy site).

My life with rocks

I’ve been asked by Szarka to write a short bio of my life in lapidary and jewelry.

I’ve always been intrigued by rocks and grew up in Wyoming hunting fossils, arrowheads and Sweetwater agates. We literally had cardboard boxes full of the agates. I still have some of arrowheads, but everything else got lost over the years.

During my early teens, I lived in Salt Lake City, Utah and then moved to Seattle, Washington where the rock hunting got put on hold for college (University of Washington, Washington State and Seattle University) and a career in teaching mathematics (Kent School District, department chair at West Seattle H.S. and Seattle Pacific University). Teaching mathematics, more school, marriage, skiing, music (guitar & singing), and back-packing did a good job keeping me busy.

There were a couple of exceptions though. I cut and polished blue tiger eye buttons on my Brer' Brian’s equipment for a suede leather coat I gave my wife for Christmas one year. I also did a little soap stone carving and, though I am a big time animal lover and didn’t even think about what I was doing, carved some ivory an art teacher had given me. Some of it was mastodon, but some was elephant ivory. That all occurred in the seventies.

I now consider myself semi-retired from mathematics. I have moved to the coast of Washington and live on the outskirts of a small (3000 +) town called Montesano. When I first moved here, I taught at Grays Harbor College, but now only pick up the occasional evening class.

Rocks and jewelry making are now a kind of obsession. I spend my summers in Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana and, of course, Washington collecting rough material. I love it. I have my trusty rock “hound”, Maggie (half yellow lab and half golden retriever) who comes with me. My garage no longer stores my car, but is full of rock and metal smithing equipment... 3 Genies, 2 expanding drum machines, polishing wheels, 3 saws, tumblers and a work station for soldering and casting.

I have attended a couple of silver smithing “boot camps” to learn the basics of metal work and supplant that with what I’ve learned from books and the internet. I’m big on experimenting and trying unusual things... some good and some not so good. I’ve screwed up quite a few times, but learn from the "screw-ups".

One of the things that I’ve done people seem to like is the backing of cut out silver coins (silver dollars, bullion, etc.) with disk of stone and mounting as you would a cabochon. I think this is original although everything has been tried before. A numismatist would probably hate me because I only do nice coins.

It’s time consuming, that’s for sure. My yard is a rockhound’s dream. When it rains, I often find myself picking through what I have and setting pieces aside to cut. I love what I call the “Wow” moment when a stone comes to life under the grinding and polishing wheels. I grew up reading fantasy and science fiction so I’m always looking for that one magical elfstone.

I’m partial to stones that have visual impact... picture jasper, opal, chatoyant stones, plume (a favorite), star garnets and sapphires, moonstone, etc. I have grown to like the faceted color stones too. My favorite is the Oregon sunstone with the schiller effect since I can find it myself. I have to have the stones faceted overseas since I don’t facet as yet... someday.

That’s it.

The mathematical left-brain is being phased out with the jewelry/lapidary right-brain activities. Instead of appreciative and successful students, I now have tangible pieces of jewelry that are being worn by people all over the world. Both are very rewarding.

I have this vision which occurs 20000 years in the future where an archeologist is digging up something with the name “Culver” stamped on the back.

Interview with Leslie Johnston

Every year Leslie bids on my surprise Halloween auction and this year she got it for a song. (yeah Leslie) I wanted to know more about this die hard beadaholique and am I ever glad I did. I decided she needed to be interviewed. She has been in the press a great deal in her area and I wanted to support her in keeping that momentum going. Her work was featured in the client's blog last week.

I am Leslie Johnston, I live in Wisconsin. I started beading and making jewelry 4 years ago. I like to create and design. Some of my designs are one of a kind. I make jewelry out of semi precious, crystals, glass, and metals.

I am disabled, so I have help with making my jewelry. My mom, Ann, strings and sews the beads for me. I pick out the colors, shapes, and textures,then put together the design. I have taken along with my mom, many classes to learn different ways of beading jewelry. I also buy books to learn more.

I have only done couple of craft fairs so far. I don't like to try to sell my jewelry on line. I pretty much sell it by word of mouth, or someone will commission me to make them something. It also sells from when I make a piece, then put a picture of it in an e-mail and send it out to family and friends.

I go to bead shows and buy beads. I have been to the largest bead show in the United States, which is here in Wisconsin.

Beading is a hobby that I enjoy very much!

How did you get started in making jewelry?

It started out when I saw a sign in a store that said, Jewelry making class. I said to my mom, lets take that class, we figured out how I was going to try to make jewelry. You see my hands shake so I can't hold, or string, or sew. So my mom does this for me. After that first class I was addicted! I wanted to learn more and make more!

What advice do you have for other designers and jewelry makers?

My advice to other people who like to make jewelry is, Have fun! Make what you want. If it doesn't look good at first, change it. You can only get better with practice, and experience. I am still learning. It will always be a learning process.

Where would you like to see yourself doing in relation to jewelry in 5 or 10 years.

I don't think that far in advance! I live and do things day by day, only because I don't know what my health will be like.

I was asked for some tutorials, by a couple ladies in my Jewelry Making Class and thought I would share the info....

First - if you want to learn it there is probably a tutorial online for it - Google is your friend!

How do you Create a Piece?

This may be an odd question, and you may not want to answer it but I am curious how do you come up with the ideas for your jewelry? Your pieces are so unique and have a definite flare that I do not often see.

Unique is that code for weird? Just kidding.

Sometimes I just wake up with an idea and I make it. Not often but sometimes.

Sometimes I sit down with a strand of beads and try to make something out of it that looks good. That usually works out into something I don't much like.

The process that works for me is as follows.

I go through my focal boxes and pull out 4 to 10 focals that are screaming to be used. I love working with focals since that is how I started. You see I was a hard core wire wrapper when I started making jewelry, no stringing for me. I soon realized that if I framed my wire art with a necklace it sold better.

I then work on my focals. I wire wrap them or look at them to see if their is anything I can do to add that extra bit of wow factor to them. I work them all up.

I then grab gift box lids or wooden bowls and put a focal in each. I set one in front of me and I look at it. What colors, textures, patterns and sizes of beads would really make this pop? If I were going to wear this piece how would I want it to look? If I wanted to make this a piece people would look at in the post office and say "wow nice necklace" what would I need to do to it?

I get a few ideas rolling and I take my focal and hold it over my beads. I categorize my beads by color. I have a hook hanging on a wall with all my strands of purple, another for orange etc.... I hold the focal over each color I think may go and see what pops. I will pull four strands of one color and put it in the bowl with a focal. Then I go onto the next color I think will harmonize or contrast and do the same. Then I spread out all the strands I have pulled and look at it to see what sizes and shapes I need to make the piece come together.

I put back what I don't need and move onto the next focal and do it all over again.

I find that if I stay within levels of transparency things blend and pop better. I use opaque with opaque and translucent with translucent. I also use the color wheel and look at complementary and contrasting colors. I like to use colors in a common hue or go for a medley of the same color in different hues.

Now I get to sit down and look at the focal with all the beads I have chosen. I decide if wire, stringing, or a combination of both would set the focal up to really show itself off and then I go at it.

As I go I think constantly about how I can make it just a bit better. A hand wired art clasp? How about a hammered accent? Wired extender chain with the best gem beads dangling down the back of the neck? Maybe this focal needs many strands of beads to really make it feel rich?

I ask myself how can I make this different and unique? What can I add that will set it apart? What would I want on it to make it my favorite necklace to wear.

That's all folks. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

What is the best way to learn how to run a jewelry making business?

I'm fairly new to jewelry making, but I already love it enough to turn it into a business. I don't want to rush, though. I don't want to be a simple bead stringer. I want to take time to develop a variety of skills so I can put some real thought and craftsmanship into my work. I also know that I will need to build up my inventory and learn more about managing a home business.

I can find classes to develop my skills, but what's the best way to learn how to run this type of business?

That is a very good question. Artists are notorious for not being strong business people, so people say. It seems the side of our brain we nurture to be creative is not even close to the side that needs to take care of our business lives. For some artists that other side of the brain appears to reside in someone else's body.

I personally think a great place to start is to determine your weaknesses and strengths in business and then make a plan from there. Take an inventory of your skills. On one side write strengths and the other weaknesses.

Budgeting ....... time and money? Can you keep a check book, know how to run quick books, pay sales taxes, track upcoming bills, keep a running idea of inventory and items you may need to restock? Not just beads and supplies/tools (very important stuff) but business cards, envelopes, stamps, packing material, printer ink. Also can you keep track of large purchases that may need to happen in the future and budget along for them, printers, digital cameras, computers, car repairs, canopies, displays etc....? Can you set yourself a task and get it done when you say you will or do you have a tendency not to be able to say no to anyone and therefore always seem to be not getting everything done? Are you highly self motivated and able to set goals that you usually reach?

Selling ........... as in are you a strong sales person? Are you outgoing and charismatic? Do you naturally have the ability to encourage someone to see something they didn't maybe see before (your jewelry in a different light). Are you genuine, warm, outgoing? Do you have strong self esteem so you can also sell yourself? Can you see yourself taking four days out of a week to set up your jewelry at a show and having three days to make jewelry (don't forget two days to clean the house, answer emails, do laundry, etc.)?

Business sense .............. do you have down the basics of cost and supply? Do you have vendors you can trust who can get you what you need at a great price? Do you understand the dynamics around pricing your work to stay in business? Not just cost of beads but of overhead for running a business? Do you have computer, photography, web design skills? Do you know how to utilize social marketing networks, know of online jewelry networks? Are you connected with local resources, the chamber of commerce, local bead society, jewelry teachers, bead stores, women's (men's) business networks, local art networks, vendors in your area that do shows?

Skill ....... do you make something that others just don't? Do you have a niche market where you stand out? Do you have the ability to see what someone would like to have or need and fill that need for them? For instance can you look at your community know where your style will fit or be able to alter it to meet the needs of a particular client?

Take a truthful evaluation of your skills, and if you don't think you can ........ ask your best friend, husband, sister or someone to do it with you.

Now just because you have a list on the weaknesses side of the page does not mean all is lost. Do you want to hone those skills or does the thought of that make you want to poke your eye out with a sharp stick? Make a third list of things you want to learn and find out how to learn them. Sign up for a small business course, get online and look through Amazon for books on the subjects you are interested in or need to be interested in.

Now you have a shorter list of attributes that you just don't care to even have. Good! Can you find someone who you can farm them out to when you get to the point of needing to? I hire a bookkeeper to help me along. I am burnt out on selling so now I have a rep who sells my work for me. I can't take pictures so I have someone that does that for me. It's OK not to be able to do everything but it's not OK to let your business fail you because you didn't know you couldn't or can't. It's amazing what you can trade for jewelry or jewelry making lessons.

I am sure there is a bunch of things I missed so if anyone has any words of wisdom please chime in. I hope this didn't discourage you since that was definitely not the intent. I have seen so many amazing artists that have just never been discovered because they lack some of these basic skills and didn't even know they needed them.

I am a strong supporter of the informational interview. That is where you interview people who you see as successful in a field you want to learn more about. People are happy to share their experiences if treated with respect and not asked questions that appear you are just looking to find the easy way out. By this I mean jewelry makers can get their undies in a twist when new jewelry makers want to know their shows, their suppliers, their skills by just asking right out.

If you were to approach a jewelry designer and say just what you said above I think you would find most people to very forthright and encouraging. Asking questions like "What do you wish you knew when you were starting out that you know now? What do you wish you had done differently? Do you have any regrets? What do you think is the best way for me to get the skills I need to be successful in this business?" My hunch is you will receive a great deal of valuable information.
